We offer 3 different sedation options…
A children’s dental practice is designed to be fun, stress-free, and not intimidating for kids of all ages. From exams to X-rays to fillings and procedures, we want to create a relaxing atmosphere for children and their parents.
A pediatric dentist is perfect for kids who are scared during their visits, have problematic behavior, or who have a physical or mental disability. At Allen Pediatric Dentistry, we make it a point to explain all procedures first using funny and kid-friendly terms. Our welcoming atmosphere and accommodating team help to limit anxiety and allow for an easy visit.
Some patients require a little extra care to ensure everyone has a pleasant experience. Pediatric sedation dentistry is a safe alternative for those who have an extreme fear of the dentist or who struggle with routine cleanings and procedures. Dr. Hunter and Dr. Aubel offer three options for dental sedation.
Nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas” is a safe sedation dentistry option used in our office. It’s administered through a small mask that is placed over the patient’s nose. One common misconception about this method is that it is used to put patients to sleep. The patient will remain conscious and alert throughout the procedure. It is designed to make patients more comfortable and relaxed before their cleaning or before a procedure. The goal of laughing gas is to have the patient feeling calm and without anxiety.
For kids who are afraid of the dentist, the dental equipment, or unfamiliar settings, laughing gas can be a good option to allow them to relax and keep calm. This will make it much easier for one of our dentists to perform their cleaning.
Oral sedation is a medication that is provided in pill form. The patient will take the medication an hour or so before the procedure. Oral sedation will usually provide light to moderate sedation effects. Most patients will remain mostly alert and can answer questions but they may feel very groggy and may remember little from the procedure.
If your child is uncomfortable for an upcoming dental procedure, oral sedation may be a good option for them.
IV sedation is administered with a needle into the veins. It is usually a deeper level of sedation than the oral alternative. One benefit of IV sedation is that the dentist is able to control the level of sedation throughout the procedure. More medication can be administered easily if needed. It is also faster acting compared to oral sedation medication.
Children who are having more invasive dental work completed may be more comfortable with IV sedation for the duration of their procedure.
