How to Prevent Baby Bottle Tooth Decay

Posted .

Baby bottle tooth decay is a serious dental problem found among children. It tends to deteriorate and erode the chompers throughout the day and cause major pain and discomfort for the child. It is very important to help your child prevent this dental problem as much as possible, and our Allen Pediatric Dentistry team recommends doing so by doing the following things:

-Wipe your child’s gums with a washcloth after each meal.
-When your child’s first tooth grows in, brush the tooth with a child-sized toothbrush and a rice-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste.
-Floss your child’s teeth once they have two teeth grow in next to each other.
-Make sure your child receives enough fluoride.
-Avoid putting sugary drinks in your child’s baby bottle.
-Do not dip your child’s binky in honey or sugar.
-Do not send your child to bed with a bottle full of sugary liquid.
-Schedule regular dental visits for your child by the time they are 1 year old or six months after their first tooth has grown in.
